She began athletics at age 10. "I was a tomboy, I ran around on the street and got dirty knees but was not particularly interested in sports. At age seven my mother tried to send me to a piano class, but I had trouble with hearing, then at age eight I went to gymnastics so I had something to be passionate about, but they said it was too late. Her mother, who had competed in athletics, enrolled her in the sport. "My mum's old coach rode by on a bicycle and got into a conversation. I was age nine, and he said to bring me along when I turned 10.
