She suffered a stress fracture in October 2011. She resumed training in December 2011 before experiencing a recurrence of the injury in January 2012. She returned to full training in February 2012. (topics, 10 Mar 2012)

She took up athletics at age 12 in Japan, and began competing in race walking in grade 11 of high school. (ryukoku, 01 Sep 2006; koukouseishinbun, 10 Nov 2014)

Upon her return from a stress fracture, she asked her coach to enter her in any available event at the national inter-high school championships. She participated in the 3000m race walk at the tournament. After winning the fourth race walk competition she entered, she decided to switch from running events to the race walk. Milestones

She became the first female race walker representing Japan to achieve a top-10 finish at the Olympic Games. Having initially crossed the line in 11th place in the women's 20km race at the 2012 Games in London, she was later promoted to eighth place following the disqualification of three Russian athletes for doping violations.
