He took up athletics at Karunaratne Buddhist School in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He took part in sprint and long jump events before switching to high jump at age 11 when he began training with coaches Philip Ranjith and Suranjith Fernando at Maris Stella College in Negombo, Sri Lanka. While representing Texas A&M University-Commerce, in 2022 he received the South Central Region NCAA Division II Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year Award from the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association [USTFCCCA].
