He has sustained multiple injuries to his Achilles tendon during his career. "They were mostly from not having enough rest. I used to force myself to train and compete, despite the pain." (YouTube channel, 12 Sep 2022)
In 1995 he took up the sport at a running club in Magelang, Indonesia. At junior high he left Magelang and moved to Salatiga to join a more professional club, which had athletes competing in national and international events. He decided to pursue the sport after winning a race in elementary school. "There was a running club in my village.
