Team Overview

General
After winning bronze at the inaugural Asian Games basketball tournament in 1951 in New Delhi, the Islamic Republic of Iran had to wait 55 years for their next Asian Games medal. The team secured bronze at the 2006 Games and followed this up with another bronze in 2010 in Guangzhou.

At Indonesia 2018 the Iranian team beat the Republic of Korea in the semifinals to progress to a gold medal game against the People's Republic of China, which they lost 84-72. By claiming silver, they matched their best Asian Games result, having also finished as runners-up in Incheon four years earlier. At the 2014 Games they were defeated by the Republic of Korea 79-77 in the final.

The Iranian team have won three titles at the Asia Cup [2007, 2009, and 2013] in 18 appearances since 1973. At the 2022 edition of the tournament they failed to finish in the top three for the first time since 2011 after a 91-76 quarterfinal defeat at the hands of Jordan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran made their third Olympic Games appearance at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, where group stage defeats to the Czech, US, and French teams ultimately saw them rank 12th out of 12 teams overall. Their other Olympic appearances saw them place 11th at the 2008 Games in Beijing, and 14th back in 1948. The Iranian team competed at the three editions of the World Cup between 2010 and 2019 without reaching the knockout stages. They qualified for the 2023 World Cup after winning six of 12 Asian qualification group games.
