Team Overview

General
The Islamic Republic of Iran are two-time medallists in men's handball at the Asian Games, securing silver in 2010 and bronze in 2006. They also experienced the disappointment of fourth-place finishes in 1998 and 2014. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, the Iranian team beat Malaysia to qualify for the main round but then finished third in Group 2 after recording one win and two defeats. Facing Saudi Arabia in the fifth-place classification match, the Iranians posted a 30-23 victory to finish the tournament on a high.

The Iranians have made 15 appearances at the Asian championship since 1989. Their sole medal came at the 2014 edition of the tournament in Manama, where they beat the United Arab Emirates 29-23 in the bronze medal match. They placed fourth at the most recent tournament in 2022, losing 26-23 to Saudi Arabia in the bronze medal match.

The team have participated in the world championship twice, placing 21st in 2015 and 24th in 2023. They won one match out of the six they played at the 2023 World Championship, defeating Chile 25-24 in the preliminary round.
