Team Overview
General
The Republic of Korea are the dominant women's handball team at the Asian Games, winning the title at seven out of the eight editions in which the sport has been part of the women's programme. The team's only slip up came at the 2010 Games in Guangzhou, where they were shocked 29-28 by Japan in the semifinals and had to settle for bronze. The Koreans gained revenge four years later, defeating the Japanese 29-19 in the final in Incheon to win gold, and then secured their seventh title at the 2018 Games in Indonesia with victory over the People's Republic of China.
The Korean team have also been regular contenders on the global stage, even if medal performances have been harder to come by in recent years. They have won six medals at the Olympic Games, a record that includes consecutive gold medals in 1988 and 1992, and the team were also world champions in 1995. However, they finished outside the top 10 at each edition of the world championship between 2011 and 2021 and were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The Republic of Korea have won a medal at every Asian championship since appearing at the inaugural competition in 1987. They have claimed gold at 16 out of the 19 tournaments, which includes victory at the six most recent editions between 2012 and 2022.
