Team Overview

General
The Islamic Republic of Iran are four-time gold medallists at the Asian Games. Only the Republic of Korea have more titles, with five.

The Iranian team first triumphed in 1974, when they beat Israel 1-0 in the final on home soil in Tehran. Their second title came at the 1990 Games with victory over the Democratic People's Republic of Korea via penalties, and they then claimed back-to-back gold medals in 1998 and 2002. The Iranians also have silver medals from 1951 and 1966, and won bronze in 2006.

Following a fourth-place finish in 2010, the Iranian team have slipped down the rankings at the two most recent editions of the Games. In 2014 they failed to progress beyond the group stage, and at the 2018 Games in Indonesia they lost 2-0 in the round of 16 to eventual gold medallists the Republic of Korea.

The Iranians appeared at the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan and failed to advance past the group stage after they did not win any of their three matches, although they did manage a 1-1 draw with eventual runners-up Uzbekistan. They made their best run at the tournament in 2016, when they reached the quarterfinals.

The Islamic Republic of Iran made their Olympic debut at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, where they finished bottom of their group. The Iranians returned to the Olympic stage eight years later, but failed to advance to the knockout stage despite defeating Brazil 1-0. Their most recent appearance at the Olympic Games was in 1976 in Montreal, where they were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage.
