Team Overview
General
Thailand won silver at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, which represents their best performance in 12 appearances since the team made their debut in 1966. The Thais started the tournament well in 2018, winning all four of their pool matches. They beat Vietnam 3-0 in the quarterfinals and defeated the Republic of Korea 3-1 in the semifinals to set up a final against the People's Republic of China. The Chinese team proved too strong, however, and Thailand had to settle for silver after a 3-0 defeat.
The impressive showing in Indonesia came four years after the Thai team claimed their first Asian Games medal. At Incheon 2014, they bounced back from a 3-1 semifinal loss to the People's Republic of China to overcome Japan 3-0 in the bronze medal match. Before 2014 their best result had been fourth, which they achieved in 1986, 1998, and 2006.
Thailand won the Asian championship title in 2009 and 2013, and were runners-up in 2017 and 2019, losing the final to Japan on both occasions. At the South East Asian Games they have been dominant this century, winning all 11 gold medals contested between 2001 and 2022.
The Thai team ranked 13th overall at the 2022 World Championship, which matched their highest finish at the tournament. The Thais' five victories from 12 preliminary round matches in the 2022 Nations League was enough to qualify the team for their first appearance in the final round of the competition. They were eliminated by Turkiye in the quarterfinals and ended the tournament ranked eighth.
